Welcome to the Hope Street Markets Website! We are a design and art markets event held seasonally, that celebrate and bring independent designers to the forefront - we are not your average markets!
We have successfully rounded up our 4th Hope Street Markets.
The Autumn Markets weekend in May was a complete success and we raised
$2,741 for HopeStreet's Winter Appeal - which goes to support Sydney's Homeless.
For those that missed out, see our gallery for images of the markets.
For now we wish you all a great Winter, unfortunately we will not be
running a Winter market this year but you can expect to hear more news from
us in a couple of months with any new dates.
In the mean time keep connected with us via our mailing list.

'Madrugada (at the moment) consists of accessories, made entirely out of 100% merino wool. These pieces feature a lot of layering, hand stitching, moulding and colour.
he Label name is in Portuguese (Brazilian) which translates to 'the hours of Madrugada'. Madrugada is a time of day , between the hours of Midnight to six am.
During these hours you can either be out in a club, bar, party, watching a film or simply be at home in bed sleeping. It's a period of time where relaxation, endings, beginnings and endless possibilities take place. The moments found within those states is where Madrugada's creative philosophy springs from. From the magic of serendipity.
Currently I work full-time in retail but ever since I was a kid I was never far from a piece of paper or pencil (i'm still not) . Later it was accompanied by scissors, glue and learning how to use a photocopying machine. Whilst doing that I also discovered how to sew from stealing my father's hankerchiefs and making outfits for my Barbie dolls.
Many years later I went to TAFE in Newcastle where I studied Fashion Design ,Clothing Production, Life drawing and Ceramics.
Mistakes, which equal to be surprises can also be inspiring, causing you to go to some place you may never have thought of before. Also the most basic elements in nature set my synapses firing!!!
So pretty much anything with an interesting curve or an abstract combo of colours found on a humble leaf is inspiring. Also being a bit of a bowerbird when it comes to the pages of magazines, i'm constantly deconstructing and re-building one big collage on one wall in my room and that inspire me.
My workspace consists of going between the kitchen bench in a small terrrace house which I share
with four other girls. The rest of my work gets finished off in my bedroom which I refer to as my Matchbox studio as it's so very tiny. The overall working conditions is a transient one as it depends on other peoples needs of the kitchen. In my room it's an amalgamation of clothing, books, cds, magazines wool & thread scattered and piled all over the place. It's chaotic yet colourful with the occassional burst of actually being organized and looking spacious.
I went to the last Hope St Market in Surry Hills. I was actually unaware at the time that it was an indoor market until I reached the address. I thought the whole set up was a wonderful opportunity for young artist and designers. To be able to show their work, to be discovered and to expand their networks by meeting like minded people. It seemed like such an encouraging boost to all involved. The atmosphere of the market definately left an impression with me and made me play with the idea, as I exited the front doors that maybe I could be part of such a positive event in the future.
I'd like to see Madrugada staying true to it's philosophy, of not being afraid of potential mistakes & to avoid becoming rigid.
I forsee an expansion and sophistication of techniques within the brand, finding it's feet in Gallery spaces and Independant stores. Interacting with people that feel akin to Madrugadas nature and not just within Australia but overseas as well.
As horas de Madrugada hasn't got a real home yet but I'm sure she will very soon.
