Welcome to the Hope
Street Markets Website!

Welcome to the Hope Street Markets Website! We are a design and art markets event held seasonally, that celebrate and bring independent designers to the forefront - we are not your average markets!

4th June 2008 - Web update

We have successfully rounded up our 4th Hope Street Markets. The Autumn Markets weekend in May was a complete success and we raised $2,741 for HopeStreet's Winter Appeal - which goes to support Sydney's Homeless.

For those that missed out, see our gallery for images of the markets.

For now we wish you all a great Winter, unfortunately we will not be running a Winter market this year but you can expect to hear more news from us in a couple of months with any new dates.

In the mean time keep connected with us via our mailing list.

Lyndsay and Kelly White aka Made by White

What do you make? Tell us about your product!

We make fun and original perspex and sterling silver brooches, necklaces and earrings. Plus perspex buttons and wall hangings.

What's your creative background, your day job and how did you start making things?

We have both been drawing, painting, sewing and making things our whole lives! Growing up, we were lucky enough to have a mother who had a go at nearly every creative trend there has been, from folk art to patchwork quilts, we have been exposed to and encouraged to try it all. Kelly's lifetime of drawing skills and Lyndsay's graphic design background have combined to make the jewellery designs come to life. Of course like most people in a creative field, we both have other jobs to pay the bills (graphic design and retail), but the jewellery is a nice change from that and gives us a chance to have some fun together.

What are the things you find most inspiring?

We are inspired by things we love and things that make our designs interesting or different from the norm. Lately we have found inspiration in childhood stories and fairytales as we believe everyone has a favourite character or story they love and this is the overall idea for our latest collection of jewellery designs. Our previous ranges have been based on our favourite animals or characters we make up ourselves, pretty much anything we would love to wear. We can also be inspired by the colours of the perspex we work with, its such a vast spectrum and you can do amazing, intricate things with it.

Where is your workspace and what is it like?

We work from home so our workspace is pretty much a lounge room and Kitchen bench most of the time. Our jewellery pretty much owns the house when we are busy, but of course we are surrounded by lots of artworks and books, great prints on our walls and lots of stationery and art supplies. We like to surround ourselves with anything we find interesting, as you can be inspired by the smallest things sometimes. Often the ideas we come up with are a combination of many thoughts, and in the end, one small detail can make a difference to the overall look of a piece of jewellery.

Why did you choose Hope Street Markets?

We chose Hope Street because it is a unique, seasonal market that showcases some fantastic products that people are making and designing. We are always amazed at how many cool things are going on and the great ideas people have come up with. We also like the way it is perceived in the media as a designers market and that there is a selection process to make sure only the best designers appear. It's also a major plus that the market is indoors, especially in winter, the venue has always been cozy and inviting for people to venture out to! The overall feel of Hope Street is friendly and casual, its a nice place to meet other creative people and introduce your goods to a wider audience.

Where would you like your art/brand to be in the future??

We kind of like where Made by White is at the moment, it has it's fans and its not too big for us to keep doing on our own. We feel no need to expand into anything bigger right now, but it would be nice to open a Made by White store one day that has a larger product range and maybe a clothing line. We are also working on some Made by White Kids jewellery for little ones which will be a fun change from our normal "adult" designs and colours.
