Welcome to the Hope
Street Markets Website!

Welcome to the Hope Street Markets Website! We are a design and art markets event held seasonally, that celebrate and bring independent designers to the forefront - we are not your average markets!

4th June 2008 - Web update

We have successfully rounded up our 4th Hope Street Markets. The Autumn Markets weekend in May was a complete success and we raised $2,741 for HopeStreet's Winter Appeal - which goes to support Sydney's Homeless.

For those that missed out, see our gallery for images of the markets.

For now we wish you all a great Winter, unfortunately we will not be running a Winter market this year but you can expect to hear more news from us in a couple of months with any new dates.

In the mean time keep connected with us via our mailing list.

People Like Us by Jonathon Larkin and Jeremy Somers

What do you make? Tell us about your product!

We make incredible t-shirts and iPod covers with really unique designs. The tees are all limited edition, hand numbered and have a story to them. We want people to know that some happy designer poured a lot of love and attention into the humble white cotton gracing their torso or wonderful cover on their iPod.

What's your creative background, your day job and how did you start making things?

We are friends from primary school (soooo sick of one another after 17 years!) and we’ve always been the type of people to have whacky ideas (like, lets make t-shirts or iPod covers).  We got started a few years ago when we were sitting around having a coffee and thinking up hilarious slogans for t-shirts. Jem has a big design background and I’m just in it for the fame and riches.

What are the things you find most inspiring?

Other people’s designs! We’re always on the lookout for something amazing and the crazy thing is, when you open you eyes it’s pretty easy to find spectacular work. We’ve been privileged to work with some pretty cool people like Alex Trochut, Steph Smitten, Ross Zietz, Les Sharpe and RA909.

Where is your workspace and what is it like?

We’ve got a space in Surry Hills and it can really only be described as a play room for little boys. We do too much playing and not enough working. Things that distract us from work are an original 1989 Nintendo with a giant projector to play SUPER BIG Super Mario, toy helicopters and ping pong.

Why did you choose Hope Street Markets?

We love Hope Street Markets because it’s local, unique and fun! The other stall holders are always really nice and have great ideas and the people who come are relaxed and happy, maybe that’s because there’s a bar too?

Where would you like your art/brand to be in the future??

We don’t have much of a retail base in Australia, so that would be nice. But we’re also constantly evolving and changing what we do, so we’ll just take it as it comes and try to keep doing something that is high quality and unique.
