Welcome to the Hope
Street Markets Website!

Welcome to the Hope Street Markets Website! We are a design and art markets event held seasonally, that celebrate and bring independent designers to the forefront - we are not your average markets!

4th June 2008 - Web update

We have successfully rounded up our 4th Hope Street Markets. The Autumn Markets weekend in May was a complete success and we raised $2,741 for HopeStreet's Winter Appeal - which goes to support Sydney's Homeless.

For those that missed out, see our gallery for images of the markets.

For now we wish you all a great Winter, unfortunately we will not be running a Winter market this year but you can expect to hear more news from us in a couple of months with any new dates.

In the mean time keep connected with us via our mailing list.

Raspberry Beret by Maggie Scardifield

What do you make? Tell us about your product!

A collection of handmade, custom designed jewellery- Raspberry Beret combines vintage & antique findings with semi precious stones, swarovski crystals, oversized chain and freshwater pearls. The Raspberry Beret philosophy is one where every object has a story to tell; and so it takes pre-loved pieces of the past- with all their faults and imperfections, re-invents them and sends them out into the world to be treasured once more.  All Raspberry Beret jewellery is one of a kind- or of limited edition.
Under the umbrella of Raspberry Beret, we also specialise in personalised jewellery, made to order. Working with particular attention to your specific requests, Raspberry Beret can repair, rework and re-invent your old jewellery.

What's your creative background, your day job and how did you start making things?

Sydney designer, Maggie Scardifield, is now and forever will be a hoarder. Since a young age, every Saturday she could be found trawling local markets for treasure- something that hasn’t changed to this day. Her grandmother and mother were the same and rummaging through their loot, she decided to do something with the trinkets she found. Before starting her own label in 2007, Maggie worked for three years for another jewellery line, ‘Miss Lucy’. She has previously worked in Fashion and PR, and is currently studying Public Relations full time at the University of Technology, Sydney, whilst designing and making jewellery for Raspberry Beret.

What are the things you find most inspiring?

The 1985 classic song by Prince inspired the name of this jewellery label, but it is the second line of the chorus – “the kind you’d find in a second hand store” – that gives a true indication of Raspberry Beret’s signature style. In Raspberry Beret’s ‘well’ of inspiration you’ll find the old family photo album; filled with images of her grandmother ‘Peg’, of whom she never met, on Newport Beach with friends in 1937 and her mother Penny on her wedding day. It is these images and the fashion forward spirit of these women that led Maggie to start designing. Through the combination of old and new elements, Maggie aims to fuse past and present; her jewellery is simultaneously original and historical. Raspberry Beret is a reflection and more importantly, a celebration- of three generations of fashionable and fabulous women.

Where is your workspace and what is it like?

Raspberry Beret operates from a small studio in North Sydney. It is small, but has everything we need- a kettle (mandatory), music, big windows to daydream out of and most importantly, a treasure trove of pretty shiny things to play with.

Why did you choose Hope Street Markets?

Having participated in the first Hope Street Markets in June 2007, Raspberry Beret was delighted to discover a refreshing alternative to the usual weekend slog at Sydney’s markets. The Hope Street initiative has really raised the bar for Sydney markets; a fantastic hub for networking, collaboration and growth for young artists and designers. The fact that it combines music, wine and shopping (…three of our favourite things) didn’t hurt either.

Where would you like your art/brand to be in the future??

Raspberry Beret’s aim is to establish a strong presence in shop fronts, online and essentially, on the streets of Sydney. With an official Raspberry Beret website in the making, we hope to continue to add to our stockists, our regular clientele and gain more editorial coverage as the label progresses. In turn, emphasizing the importance of handmade, quality produced design in Australia.
