Welcome to the Hope
Street Markets Website!

Welcome to the Hope Street Markets Website! We are a design and art markets event held seasonally, that celebrate and bring independent designers to the forefront - we are not your average markets!

4th June 2008 - Web update

We have successfully rounded up our 4th Hope Street Markets. The Autumn Markets weekend in May was a complete success and we raised $2,741 for HopeStreet's Winter Appeal - which goes to support Sydney's Homeless.

For those that missed out, see our gallery for images of the markets.

For now we wish you all a great Winter, unfortunately we will not be running a Winter market this year but you can expect to hear more news from us in a couple of months with any new dates.

In the mean time keep connected with us via our mailing list.

The Strutt Sisters

Our name’s are Catherine and Jennifer Strutt and our brand name is The Strutt Sisters. We are twins and collaborate on all of our creative work.

What do you make? Tell us about your product!

We make jewellery - brooches, earrings, necklaces, keyrings and cufflinks for the fellas ( or the ladies!) They are made of light weight ply so our earrings won't tear your earlobe and we use reproduction and genuine vintage fabric.

What's your creative background, your day job and how did you start making things?

We are visual artists and have been exhibiting professionally since 1997. We are well known for our mixed media assemblages made from ply, paint, aluminium and images from the 1920's to the 1950's. They are often humourous and as we are also musicians, they often have a musical or folk dancer theme. We show at Damien Minton Gallery, Redfern. Our jewellery has popped out the side of our artmaking in a need to find something lightweight and funky that we couldn't find out there already. It has become Strutt wearables! We are also musicians.

What are the things you find most inspiring?

We are inspired by the design and colour of Scandinavia, both traditional and contemporary. We have travelled to Scandinavia playing music four times and each time we are inspired by something new be it in their fashion or print media or tradtional folk costumes and painted wooden houses. We are also inspired by great fabrics, colour and style of the 50's.

Where is your workspace and what is it like?

Our workspace is in our classroom size art studio in Hamilton, Newcastle NSW. It is a fantastic space with white painted walls and a whole wall of windows letting in natural light and timber floor. We have two old tables set up just for our jewellery making, one of them holding our big collection of fabric and piles of threads covering the floor! We are totally set up with a stereo, a fridge, microwave and telly! Luxury.

Why did you choose Hope Street Markets?

We chose Hope St Markets on recommendation from the owner of a shop we stock. We have been in a couple of artists markets before and they are awesome so we were looking around for others. Plus the website is great as it shows the kind of stuff you can get at the market and we thought it kind of looked like us!

Where would you like your art/brand to be in the future??

We hope to also do a clothing line way in the future and possibly homewares, so we see our brand being marketed in a few areas. Firstly we are concentrating on expanding our stockists into all states of Oz and then possibly Scandinavia and Japan.

Where can we buy your stuff?

For now you can buy our stuff at Betty Mim on Darby St, Newcastle and at Earthquirks at Nelson Bay. In the next few weeks you will also be able to order on line from our website.
