Welcome to the Hope
Street Markets Website!

Welcome to the Hope Street Markets Website! We are a design and art markets event held seasonally, that celebrate and bring independent designers to the forefront - we are not your average markets!

4th June 2008 - Web update

We have successfully rounded up our 4th Hope Street Markets. The Autumn Markets weekend in May was a complete success and we raised $2,741 for HopeStreet's Winter Appeal - which goes to support Sydney's Homeless.

For those that missed out, see our gallery for images of the markets.

For now we wish you all a great Winter, unfortunately we will not be running a Winter market this year but you can expect to hear more news from us in a couple of months with any new dates.

In the mean time keep connected with us via our mailing list.

What do you make? Tell us about your product!

A bold and adventurous collection of one-of-a-kind home ware and accessories individually designed and made in Marrickville. Wife offers a contemporary twist on traditional textiles, craft and the domestic. Wife products are sustainable and designed with a sensitivity towards their distinctive materials, which are almost always 100% reused. All products are hand made and carefully crafted using the finest of fabrics including lush natural fibres like wool, silk, cotton and linen.

What's your creative background, your day job and how did you start making things?

I’ve been ‘making’ in some way for as long as I can remember and feel as though I entered this world with a needle and (red) thread in my hand. Cloth and textiles have always been part of my creative process. My products give me a space to play with colour, texture and the exciting elements of traditional textile and craft processes.
Last year, I resigned from an admin job to pursue a full time arts practice. I love the diversity of my practice, from my wife. products to my visual and performing arts work. The lines between them become a little more blurry each day! I currently lecture in the Textiles department at the UNSW College of Fine Arts and I am working on a textile project funded by an Australia Council New Work Grant.

What are the things you find most inspiring?

My practice focuses on finding the unexpected by drawing on that which is familiar. I am fascinated with the languages we are able to create through the manipulation of materials and processes. I am also inspired by thriftiness, domesticity, the hand made, traditional crafts and subversions of femininity!

Where is your workspace and what is it like?

I am lucky enough to have a beautiful space in a hut at the Addison Road Community Centre in Marrickville. My workspace is where I make my products, create my artwork and it also acts as a rehearsal space for performances. My products tend to take over, so I like to keep my walls covered with current artwork for some balance.

Why did you choose Hope Street Markets?

Hope Street Markets comes across as a professional, community minded project. I am happy to be associated with a market that positions itself in a responsible and thoughtful way by not only supporting local artists and designers, but also socially marginalized members of our community.

Where would you like your art/brand to be in the future?

I hope for a resurgence in handmade goods and I hope to inspire more people to make and buy handmade. I would like to keep handcrafted designs accessible to everyone.

Where can we buy your stuff?
