Welcome to the Hope
Street Markets Website!

Welcome to the Hope Street Markets Website! We are a design and art markets event held seasonally, that celebrate and bring independent designers to the forefront - we are not your average markets!

4th June 2008 - Web update

We have successfully rounded up our 4th Hope Street Markets. The Autumn Markets weekend in May was a complete success and we raised $2,741 for HopeStreet's Winter Appeal - which goes to support Sydney's Homeless.

For those that missed out, see our gallery for images of the markets.

For now we wish you all a great Winter, unfortunately we will not be running a Winter market this year but you can expect to hear more news from us in a couple of months with any new dates.

In the mean time keep connected with us via our mailing list.

Wrapt Felt Originals by Amanda Holland and Belinda Holland

What do you make? Tell us about your product!

We make felt accessories that are totally original and one-off pieces.  They are interesting in both colour, texture and design and will allow the wearer to make a unique fashion statement, while also being truly sensual and warm to wear. Our felt items are entirely handmade using fine Australian merino wool and pure silk.

What's your creative background, your day job and how did you start making things?

We both have an arts background (Sydney College of the Arts), one in visual arts, also working as a visual artist/painter and art educator the other in textiles and design. After falling in love with felt at a two day workshop we did for a laugh we became addicted to this material and now see it as a new direction to our art practice.  It is also an opportunity to get together share ideas, laugh and make something new to wear!

What are the things you find most inspiring?

The wool and the process of felting is quite amazing.  Combining it with silk and then not quite being in control of these materials keeps you experimenting and truly inspired.  We find inspiration from colour and what  colours can dowith, and against each other (just watch what happens when blue and orange get together!). Looking at shapes and colours in the natural and urban world means you never stop thinking of what you will play with next in felt.  We also get ideas from looking at modernist art and trying to create the same palette with felt and silk instead of paint.

Where is your workspace and what is it like?

We work individually in our studios and kitchens and then come together at our father's house which has more space to felt and consume Tim Tams about once a week.  Our work spaces are covered in wool, felt, silk, art books and empty Tim Tams packaging.

Why did you choose Hope Street Markets?

We thought it had the right feel and spirit for us and are glad to be part of Hope Street's greater work.  As it is an independent design art market we feel this this reflects our belief in original rather than mass produced products.  We also are excited about being teamed up with other artists and designers.

Where would you like your art/brand to be in the future?

Any where that people appreciate individual handmade artist designed items.

Where can we buy your stuff?

Currently via the web and commission (just email us) and soon to be on Etsy and of course Hope Stree Markets.
